Living in downtown New Port Richey
Sims Park, on Bank Street along the Cotee River and Orange Lake, has been city parkland since George Sims gave it to the city in 1924. It has an amphitheater, a splash pad, a playground, outdoor workout equipment, five rentable pavilions, paved walking trails and a kayak launch, and leashed dogs are allowed.
Facing the park on Main Street, the Hacienda Hotel is a 1927 Mission and Spanish Revival landmark on the National Register. The city bought it in 2003, and it reopened in September 2022 as a 40-room hotel with a king suite and Sasha's on the Park restaurant. A few blocks away on Grand Boulevard, the Richey Suncoast Theatre, which opened in 1926, is a nonprofit stage with a full season of plays and musicals.
Parks, water and trails in New Port Richey
Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, east of the city off Little Road, covers more than 8,000 acres of pine flatwoods, cypress domes and marsh. It has a paved trail of about 7 miles that links to the Suncoast Trail, plus hiking and horse trails, cabins and primitive campsites.
About 4 miles west of downtown, Robert K. Rees Memorial Park at Green Key is a 45-acre county park on the Gulf. It has a swimming beach, a boardwalk and observation deck, canoe and kayak access, fishing and a playground, and it is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Anclote Key Preserve State Park and the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks are about 10 miles to the south.
Homes in New Port Richey
The mix runs from homes on the older streets around downtown and the Cotee River to waterfront canal neighborhoods and newer planned communities. Gulf Harbors, west of US 19, is a canal community where many homes have docks on canals leading to the Gulf. To the southeast, Trinity is a group of planned communities developed from the late 1980s along State Road 54 and Trinity Boulevard, among them Champions Club, Thousand Oaks, Wyndtree and Chelsea Place. The Medical Center of Trinity is nearby.
Getting around
US 19 is the main north-south road along the coast. State Road 54 runs east past Trinity to the Suncoast Parkway, a toll road that leads south to the Veterans Expressway and Tampa International Airport, about 30 miles away. Tarpon Springs is about 10 miles south.
