Clearwater is a Pinellas County city on the Gulf of Mexico, west of Tampa and north of St. Petersburg. It has two parts: a mainland downtown on Clearwater Harbor, and Clearwater Beach, a barrier island across the Intracoastal Waterway reached by the Clearwater Memorial Causeway. State Road 60 runs from the beach through downtown and east over Old Tampa Bay on the Courtney Campbell Causeway, and Clearwater Beach is about 20 miles from Tampa International Airport.
Clearwater Beach and Pier 60 Park
Clearwater Beach runs about 2.5 miles along the Gulf. Tripadvisor ranked it 2nd in the U.S. in its 2026 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Beaches awards. The center of the beach is Pier 60 Park, where State Road 60 ends at the sand. The park has a playground, covered pavilions and paved walking paths. Every evening the plaza in front of the pier hosts Sunsets at Pier 60, a festival of local artists, craftspeople, street performers and live music that runs from two hours before sunset to two hours after. South of the pier, the Beach Walk promenade, completed in 2008, lines the sand with hotels and condominiums.
Across from the pier, the city is in the final phase of rebuilding the Clearwater Beach Marina, and tour boats already run from new slips along Coronado Drive. On Island Estates, just north of the Memorial Causeway, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a working marine rescue and rehabilitation center. Sand Key Park is south across Clearwater Pass.
Downtown Clearwater and Coachman Park
Downtown's waterfront centerpiece is the redesigned Coachman Park, which looks out over Clearwater Harbor and the Memorial Causeway bridge. The park's BayCare Sound is an outdoor amphitheater with 4,000 covered seats plus lawn space. Cyclists can reach the park on the Pinellas Trail or the Memorial Causeway Trail. The Clearwater Ferry runs from the park to Clearwater Beach and Dunedin, and the nearby Park Street Terminal is a stop for PSTA buses and the Jolley Trolley. BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater is the spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies and home of the Clearwater Threshers, a Phillies minor league team.
Getting around Clearwater
The Memorial Causeway links downtown and the beach, and the Sand Key Bridge continues south from Clearwater Beach to Sand Key. Heading east, State Road 60 crosses Old Tampa Bay on the 9.9-mile Courtney Campbell Causeway, which has a trail alongside. Downtown Tampa is about 25 miles from Clearwater Beach. St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is about 10 miles southeast of downtown Clearwater by road. The Jolley Trolley has run since 1982 and connects Clearwater Beach with North Clearwater Beach and Sand Key.
Homes in Clearwater
About a third of the city's 39 square miles is water, so many homes sit on the harbor, the Intracoastal or the Gulf. On the beach, housing includes condominiums in the Beach Walk area and homes on Island Estates. On the mainland, the Harbor Oaks Residential District is a National Register historic district listed in 1988. Developer Dean Alvord laid it out in the early twentieth century between Druid Road, South Fort Harrison Avenue, Lotus Path and Clearwater Harbor.
