Dunedin is a Pinellas County city on St. Joseph Sound, bordered by Clearwater to the south and east and unincorporated Palm Harbor to the north. It is about 5 miles by road from downtown Clearwater and a little over 20 miles from Tampa International Airport. Incorporated in 1899 and named for the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, it has a downtown on Main Street where the Pinellas Trail runs through, and the Dunedin Causeway leads to Honeymoon Island State Park.
Beaches, parks and things to do in Dunedin
Honeymoon Island State Park, reached by the Dunedin Causeway about 5 miles from downtown, protects about 4 miles of Gulf shoreline. It has the 3.5-mile Osprey Trail loop, the Pelican Cove Trail and the Rotary Centennial Nature Center. The park is open, with some areas and amenities still being renovated after the 2024 storms. From its southern tip, a passenger ferry crosses Hurricane Pass to Caladesi Island State Park, and that service has resumed. In town, Hammock Park is a 90-acre city nature park north of downtown with about 5 miles of trails, boardwalks, a butterfly garden and a disc golf course, just off the Pinellas Trail.
Downtown Dunedin and Main Street
Downtown Main Street is lined with independent shops, sidewalk cafes and restaurants, and the Pinellas Trail crosses it in the middle of downtown, so many people arrive by bike. Dunedin has a long list of craft breweries, including Dunedin Brewery, which bills itself as Florida's oldest microbrewery. The Dunedin Fine Art Center, opened in 1975, has nearly 40,000 square feet of galleries and studios. Each April the Dunedin Highland Games, a Scottish festival, take place at Highlander Park. The Clearwater Ferry also connects Dunedin to downtown Clearwater and Clearwater Beach.
Golf and spring training in Dunedin
Dunedin Golf Club is a public 18-hole, par-72 course designed by Donald Ross. It opened on January 1, 1927, and was the home of the PGA of America from 1945 to 1962. A 2024 restoration returned the course to its original Ross design. TD Ballpark on Douglas Avenue has been the spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays since 1977 and seats 8,500 after a renovation completed in 2020. It is also home to the Dunedin Blue Jays, a Single-A team.
