Indian Rocks Beach is a small barrier island city on Sand Key in Pinellas County. It has about 2.7 miles of Gulf of Mexico beach between Belleair Shore to the north and Indian Shores to the south. Its east side faces the Narrows of the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Indian Rocks Causeway (Walsingham Road) crosses the Narrows to the mainland near Largo. Downtown Clearwater is about 10 miles away by car, downtown St. Petersburg about 20 miles, and downtown Tampa about 27 miles.
Living in Indian Rocks Beach
Indian Rocks Beach was developed in the early 1920s as a weekend getaway and incorporated as a city in 1956. It covers under a square mile of land, with Gulf Boulevard as its main street. The PSTA Suncoast Beach Trolley runs along Gulf Boulevard with stops in town, heading north to Clearwater Beach and south to St. Pete Beach. City events run through the year, including A Taste of IRB in April, Oktoberfest, and a holiday tree lighting followed by a Christmas parade. The Indian Rocks Historical Museum is in a beach cottage built in 1939 by Carl H. Moseley, which was saved from demolition in 1980. It now sits at 203 4th Avenue beside Chic-A-Si Park and opens Wednesday through Saturday outside July, August and September.
The beach and parks in Indian Rocks Beach
The city has 27 public beach accesses along Gulf Boulevard. The largest is the Pinellas County beach access park at 1700 Gulf Boulevard, between 17th and 18th avenues, which has a paid lot and restrooms. Pinellas County's nourishment project placed new sand on much of the beach in late 2025, and the dunes were replanted by May 2026.
- Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve: a half-mile boardwalk trail through mangroves to a view of the Intracoastal Waterway.
- Kolb Park, on Bay Palm Boulevard: the city's largest park, with a ballfield, a skate park, a playground, and tennis and pickleball courts.
- Brown Park: basketball, racquetball, tennis and a playground.
- Chic-A-Si Park: a bocce court and a picnic shelter.
- 10th Avenue Park: a boardwalk and a canoe and kayak launch.
- Boating: the city runs the 15th Avenue Boat Ramp, and Keegan Clair Park has a boat dock.
Dining and shopping in Indian Rocks Beach
Restaurants, cafes and bars line Gulf Boulevard and the streets just off it, from Cuban sandwich counters to Italian dining rooms. The independent shops sell clothing, gifts, fishing rods and tackle, surf apparel, beach gear, sweets and locally made art. Most of it is within walking distance of the beach accesses, and speed limits on the island are low.
Homes in Indian Rocks Beach
Single-family homes are the most common property type. They range from 1950s and 1960s houses to homes built in the 2000s and 2010s, and many sit on the water. Condominiums are mostly in buildings from the 1970s and 1980s, a large share of them Gulf-front or on the Intracoastal. There are also townhouses built from the 1980s through the 2010s, and condo-hotel units in resort buildings. Lots on the east side face the Narrows, and Gulf-front parcels face the beach.
