Largo is Pinellas County's third-largest city, incorporated in 1905 and set in the middle of the peninsula. Clearwater is to its north and Seminole and Pinellas Park to its south, and the city reaches the Intracoastal Waterway on the southwest and Tampa Bay on the northeast. US 19 and Alternate US 19 run north and south through the city, Ulmerton Road crosses it east to west, and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is about 6 miles east of downtown, with Tampa International Airport about 20 miles east.
Parks and nature in Largo
Largo Central Park, opened in 1995 on the former county fairgrounds, covers about 70 acres. It is home to the Central Park Performing Arts Center, across from the Largo Public Library, and to the accessible Rainbow Rotary Playground. The Largo Central Park Nature Preserve adds 31 acres of boardwalks, a two-story observation tower and more than 130 recorded bird species. On the Intracoastal Waterway, George C. McGough Nature Park (11901 146th Street North) is known as the turtle park for its deck over a pond full of turtles. It also has the Narrows Nature Center, birds-of-prey enclosures, a 0.9-mile trail and a canoe launch, and dogs are not allowed.
John S. Taylor Park is a 156.5-acre county park on a 53-acre lake, with a disc golf course, a shell trail, a boat ramp for non-motorized boats and a direct link to the Pinellas Trail. Walsingham Park, 354 acres around a 100-acre lake, has a 6-mile shared-use trail, a dog park and a boat ramp for boats without gas engines. It has a Seminole mailing address but sits on the Largo side of the city line.
Florida Botanical Gardens and Heritage Village in Largo
Pinewood Cultural Park, on Ulmerton Road, holds two county attractions side by side. The Florida Botanical Gardens, opened in December 2000 across 182 acres, are free to visit. They include rose, butterfly, native plant, cactus and succulent, and tropical fruit gardens, plus a wetlands walkway added in 2018. Heritage Village, next door, preserves historic homes and buildings from across the Pinellas peninsula on 21 wooded acres, including an 1850s log house that is the county's oldest standing structure.
Getting around and homes in Largo
The Pinellas Trail passes through Largo, and State Roads 686 and 688 connect the city to Interstate 275 for trips to Tampa and St. Petersburg. Indian Rocks Beach is about 6 miles west of downtown Largo by road, and the Belleair Causeway to Belleair Beach is a short drive northwest.
