Riverview is an unincorporated community along the Alafia River in Hillsborough County, about 12 miles southeast of downtown Tampa, reached by I-75, U.S. 301 and the Selmon Expressway. Living in Riverview on the Alafia River
Riverview was founded in 1885 on the Alafia's north shore, near an older settlement called Peru; the two merged in the 1940s under the Riverview name. The river is still the center of outdoor life:
- Riverview Civic Center, on Park Drive, is a 9-acre county park on the south bank. It has a boat ramp, a canoe and kayak launch, a fishing pier, covered picnic pavilions, a playground and a meeting hall.
- Williams Park Boat Ramp, beside the U.S. 41 bridge over the Alafia, has four launch lanes that take larger boats. From there it is a short run to Tampa Bay.
Parks and trails in Riverview
Bell Creek Nature Preserve covers 477 acres east of McMullen Road and south of Boyette Road, with marked, daylight-only trails through scrub, oak hammock and open grassland. Its county Hiking Spree loop runs about 4.6 miles. To the southeast, the south entrance of Balm Boyette Scrub Nature Preserve serves about 25 miles of mountain-bike trails.
Shopping, dining and getting around Riverview
Winthrop, at Bloomingdale Avenue and Providence Road, is a 148-acre walkable, mixed-use development. About 210,000 square feet of shops, restaurants and services sit among houses, live-work units and apartments. Farther south, shopping centers line Big Bend Road near U.S. 301, and St. Joseph's Hospital-South is on Big Bend Road. Brandon's regional mall is a short drive north.
I-75 runs along Riverview's western edge, with interchanges at Big Bend Road (Exit 246) and Gibsonton Drive (Exit 250), among others. U.S. 301 runs north to the Selmon Expressway into downtown Tampa.
Homes in Riverview
Much of Riverview's housing has been built since 2000, largely single-family homes with townhomes and villas in the mix. Master-planned communities include Panther Trace, Summerfield, South Fork, Rivercrest and Waterleaf, many with clubhouses and pools. Winthrop adds a traditional town-style layout. Homes along the Alafia include river-view and riverfront lots. Newer communities may carry CDD assessments in addition to HOA dues, so check each property.
