Town 'n' Country is a large unincorporated area of Hillsborough County directly northwest of Tampa International Airport, about 12 miles northwest of downtown Tampa, crossed by the Veterans Expressway, Waters Avenue and Sheldon Road. Most of it was built from 1958 to 1978, when the builder LaMonte-Shimberg put up nearly 8,000 single-family homes and townhouses on a former dairy farm, making it one of the Tampa area's earliest large suburbs. The airport's northwest corner lies inside its boundary.
Living in Town 'n' Country
Before the 1950s this was mostly cattle land and natural areas. Development began in 1958 on a 525-acre dairy farm and spread across what is now a Census-defined area of about 24 square miles. Established neighborhoods include Bay Crest Park, Countryway, Rocky Creek and Sweetwater Creek, the last two named for the creeks that run through the area.
Parks and waterways in Town 'n' Country
Town 'N Country Park, at 7002 West Hanna Avenue, is a 25.74-acre, non-staffed county park with pickleball and tennis courts, a softball field, a basketball court, a playground, an open field, picnic shelters, a concession stand and restrooms. Rocky Creek and Sweetwater Creek cross the area. Just outside the boundary to the west, about 5 miles from Town 'N Country Park, Upper Tampa Bay Conservation Park at 8001 Double Branch Road covers 596 acres of mangroves and salt marsh. It has a boardwalk, hiking trails, a nature center with live animal displays, and canoe and kayak rentals.
Getting around Town 'n' Country
With the airport on its southeast edge, Town 'n' Country is one of the closest residential areas to Tampa International Airport. The Veterans Expressway runs north through the area toward Westchase and Citrus Park, and Waters Avenue and Sheldon Road are major local roads. Downtown Tampa is about 12 miles southeast.
Homes in Town 'n' Country
Much of the housing dates from the 1958 to 1978 build-out: single-family homes and townhouses on established suburban streets. Later neighborhoods such as Countryway and Bay Crest Park add other styles and lot layouts. Addresses throughout read Tampa, but the area is governed by Hillsborough County.
