Hyde Park is a historic neighborhood in the city of Tampa, on the west side of the Hillsborough River about 1.5 miles from downtown Tampa, between Kennedy Boulevard on the north and Bayshore Boulevard along Hillsborough Bay. Founded in the 1880s, it holds a National Register historic district with homes from the late 1800s through the 1940s. Hyde Park Village, an open-air shopping and dining district, sits at its center.
Living in Hyde Park
Hyde Park took its name in 1886, when O. H. Platt of Hyde Park, Illinois, bought the Robert Jackson farm here. Henry B. Plant built his Tampa Bay Hotel just across the river two years later, and streetcar lines on Swann and Rome avenues sped up development. The Hyde Park Historic District covers about 560 acres, roughly bounded by the Hillsborough River and bay, Rome Avenue and Swann Avenue. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 4, 1985, and the City of Tampa designated Hyde Park a local historic district the same year. This page covers the city's Historic Hyde Park, Hyde Park Preservation, Spanishtown Creek and Hyde Park Village neighborhoods. North Hyde Park, north of Kennedy Boulevard, is a separate neighborhood.
Parks, water and things to do in Hyde Park
Bayshore Boulevard runs along Hyde Park's bay side. Its 10-foot-wide sidewalk starts at Columbus Statue Park at Platt Street and follows the seawall about 4.5 miles south to Gandy Boulevard, with an on-road bike lane on the northbound side from Rome Avenue south. Kate Jackson Park, at Rome and Morrison avenues, sits on land that was once Kate Jackson's property, acquired by the city in 1944. A lions fountain marks the corner, and the park has a community center dedicated in 2003, a splash pad, a basketball court and a playground rebuilt in 2025. Across the river, the Tampa Riverwalk links Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Straz Center and the Tampa Museum of Art.
Shopping and dining in Hyde Park
Hyde Park Village opened in 1985 as an open-air district of shops and restaurants centered on Swann and Rome avenues. It mixes fashion boutiques such as Ralph Lauren and Veronica Beard with restaurants, fitness studios and the Palihouse hotel. The village hosts a Fresh Market on the first Sunday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 80 vendors sell produce, plants and handmade goods, with live music in Village Circle. SoHo's restaurants and bars along South Howard Avenue are a few blocks west.
Homes in Hyde Park
Hyde Park's oldest homes are Queen Anne and Colonial Revival houses from its early decades, followed by Craftsman bungalows and Mediterranean Revival homes from the 1910s through the 1940s, with newer townhomes and condominiums filling in. Inside the local historic district, the city protects historic homes and applies design guidelines to new construction, so check exterior plans with the City of Tampa early. Kennedy Boulevard leads east to downtown and west to Westshore, the Selmon Expressway crosses the neighborhood, and Tampa International Airport is about 5 miles northwest.
